Outreach & Public Engagement
Outreach and public engagement is a key pillar of a lot of my work, particularly in designing and building exhibits anyone can interact with. For a few highlights:
- Annual Stargazing @ Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (2022-2025): running Audio Universe VR and SciLights: Stellar Evolution exhibits
- Gravitational Wave Sky (2024): Multisensory immersive video, experiencing the O3 set of LIGO gravitational wave detections
- ZeroCon UN accessibility conferences (2024): exhibiting Audio Universe VR
- Audio Universe: Tour of the Solar System (2021): A unique, fully sonified planetarium show for BVI children.
- Caribbean Tour of the Solar System (2025): Working with Trinidadian scientists and musicians to culturally adapt sonification using Carribean musical elements and instrumentation, as well as narration.
- Multiple Translations and screenings internationally.
- Galaxy Makers Exhibit & VR Movies (2016-2019): RAS, London & Observatory, Leiden. Core team member developing virtual reality tour of the EAGLE universe (audio and visuals).
- Tour of the Exctromagnetic spectrum (2016): Designing and running outreach exhibit, exhibited at the Space Day schools event in Feb. and the Schools Science Festival
- The World Machine, Lumiere Festival, Durham UK: Developer for Cathedral projection, centerpiece of event visited by > 200k people over 3 days
- Reddit AMA: The EAGLE project: Online Q&A.
Research, Innovation & Collaboration
I’m most motivated when working with a diversity of subjects and groups of people. I’ve been involved in a number of R&I activities with international and interdisciplinary collaboration, most with a Data Science link. A few highlights:
- Jdaviz Sonification integration: Working with development team of STScI-NASA tool, incorporating
strauss
sonification for hyperspectral data. - DigiStar Collaboration: Collaborating with the premiere provider of planetarium software to incorporate
strauss
as a sonification engine (led by Dr Chris Harrison). - GB Row Project: Analysis and data visualisation for the GB Row data, collected by teams of rowers circumnavigating Great Britain.
- UKSA Mission Incubator: Building a costing model and participating in a pilot mission design study.
- GBH News Boston sonification collaboration: Designing sonification for a podcast on the “Fiscal Cliff” hitting US universities.
- Artistic Collaborations: working with artists to develop multimedia exhibitions, such as Infinity in our Hands (Kristine Diekman, Liz Waugh McManus, Lisa Mansfield).
